Brief History of JCM
Officially
named the Japan Council of Metalworkers’ Unions (JCM), we are an umbrella
organization representing the unions in Japan’s metal industry. The JCM was
founded under the name IMF-Japan Council (IMF-JC) on May 16, 1964, the year of the
Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were the first to be held in Asia. In November of
that same year, the IMF-JC became an affiliate of the International
Metalworkers’ Federation (IMF), which is now a part of the IndustriALL Global
Union.
1957.4 IMF Japan office is opend in Tokyo.
1964.5 IMF-JC (Japan Council)is established with a membership of
470,000.
1964.11 Affiliation to the IMF at its 20th World Congress.
1975 The name changes to Japan Council of Metalworkers' Unions.
1976 Initiation of "JC Joint Struggle" to maximize effectiveness of
the Spring Labor Offensive .
1984 20th anniversary. Membership exceeds 2 million.
1985 IMF World Congress is held in Tokyo.
1989 RENGO is formed, achieving labor front integration.
1994 30th anniversary. Membership rises to 2.6 million.
1999 JAM is an amalgamation of ZENKIN RENGO and KINZOKU KIKAI.
2003 KIKANROREN is an amalgamation of TEKKOROREN, ZOSENJUKIROREN and HITETSURENGO,
Present 5 ndustrial-union organization.
2012.6 The IMF merges with the ICEM and ITGLWF to form the IndustriALL Global
Union.
2012.9 With the formation of IndustriALL, the IMF-JC changes its English abbreviation
to JCM and its Appelication to JC Metal at its 51st National Convention.
2014 50th anniversary. Membership 2 million.
